Nathan A Smith was born in Winslow, AZ in 1987. After moving around the country with his family, Highland, CA became home. He attended Redlands East Valley High School, before going to College at Penn State. At Penn State Nathan learned photojournalism and technical photography skills, at the award winning Daily Collegian. He moved his way through the ranks of the photography staff and became Photo Editor, and then Multimedia Editor. While working for The Daily Collegian, he covered events such as President Obama’s visit to Penn State, the NIT Championships, the Rose bowl and many other news and sporting events. At the same time, he earned his BFA in photography from Penn State. During his course work he learned alternative processes, print-making and the art of book making.
His art work has been driven by photojournalism, and documenting people and their lifestyles. He is influenced by photographers Alec Soth, Joe McNally, William Eggleston and Robert Frank, as well as film, street art and his subjects. After his images are taken he uses book making, found objects, alternative processes and printmaking to complete his work. The post photography work helps to connect the images to each other and the world the images are taken of.
